Stark Museum Slide Talk Explores the Woman Who Illustrated an Entire Herbal — Alone
The Stark Museum of Art is hosting Blackwell's Orange: Art from A Curious Herbal, a slide talk about one of history's most remarkable botanical artists. In 1737, Elizabeth Blackwell published A Curious Herbal — a two-volume identification of medicinal plants featuring 500 illustrations she created entirely herself, all to raise money to free her husband from debtor's prison. The talk explores how she became the first woman to produce an herbal of this scale, including her illustration of The Orange Tree and her connections to English botanical gardens. Orange County Sales Tax Collections Mostly Flat for June
Texas Comptroller's Office data shows most Orange County communities saw sales tax revenues dip or stagnate in June. For the year to date, only Bridge City and West Orange are ahead of last year's pace. Bridge City leads with a strong 12.57% year-to-date gain, now at $1.78 million. West Orange is up 4.45% for the year. The city of Orange is down about $260,000 for the year (-3.10%), while Pinehurst and Vidor are also running behind last year's totals. Orange County overall posted a healthy 7.19% monthly increase in June, collecting $866,100. Cities are currently in the process of adopting their 2026-27 budgets, and the dip in sales tax income may factor into those decisions.

Texas Lawmakers Push Army Corps to Keep Orange County Flood Protection Moving
Congressmen Randy Weber and Brian Babin, along with Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, have written to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers urging it to keep the Orange County element of the Sabine Pass to Galveston Bay coastal storm protection project on track. Congress first authorized the S2G project in 2018 to reduce storm surge damage along the upper Texas coast, including Orange County communities that have faced repeated flooding. As project costs have risen and the Corps works through a new authorization review, the lawmakers want to ensure Orange County's portion continues advancing — and that the Corps has the direction needed to begin construction with available funds. The project would provide storm surge protection for more than 86,000 residents and nearly $5.9 billion in annual economic activity.
