Orange Firefighters Union and City Sit Down to Negotiate, Staffing Shortage Leads the Agenda
Following weeks of public tension over staffing levels at the Orange Fire Department, the city and the Orange Professional Firefighters Association have formally begun contract negotiations. Staffing shortage is the union's top priority at the table — a concern that came into sharp focus earlier this month when the union said the department was severely understaffed during the Beckett & Beckett industrial fire on Highway 87. Both sides are now working toward a new agreement that addresses the concerns firefighters have raised about their ability to protect the community. Read More

Your Hotel Stay Funds Local Events: How Orange County's HOT Money Works
There's a Texas two-step most people don't know about. Every time someone pays for a hotel room or short-term rental in Orange County, a slice of that bill — called the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) — flows back into the community to fund tourism and local events. Orange County disperses about $250,000 in HOT funds annually, and applications for the current cycle are open now through August 31 at 5 p.m. Last year, 31 groups applied and 29 received funding — supporting everything from arts events to historical preservation to sporting tournaments like Bassmaster. Last year's process expanded to allow for-profit businesses to apply for the first time, capped at $5,000 per award.
