Orange County Pursuing Federal Grant to Build New Jail

Orange County Commissioners Court has given Sheriff Bobby Smith the green light to apply for a federal grant that could fund a new county jail. The current facility, which dates to 1976 with various add-ons over the decades, holds 350 inmates — and Smith is proposing a new 500-inmate jail on 17 acres of sheriff's office land off FM 1442, closer to the center of the county. The grant application comes through the U.S. Department of Justice and won't be due until 2027. County Judge John Gothia noted that if no grant comes through, a costly bond election would be the only alternative — one he said voters are unlikely to approve. Read More

Stark Museum Offering Fall Pumpkin Door Hanger Workshop

Get into the fall spirit at the Stark Museum of Art's upcoming CREATE! Workshop, where participants will paint and decorate pumpkin-shaped wood panels to create their own seasonal door hanger. The workshop is open to adults and children ages 7 and up — kids 17 and under must be accompanied by a registered adult. Two sessions are available: 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The materials fee is $10 and includes all supplies. Space is limited to 20 per session, so register soon at starkmuseum.org. Read More

YMCA Launches Little Masters Art Camp at Area Elementary Schools

The YMCA of Southeast Texas – Orange County is launching its Little Masters Art Camp starting September 14, running through October 1 for six classes at just $30. The afterschool program is designed to inspire creativity and self-expression through hands-on art projects and activities. It's being offered on-site at two locations: Vidor Elementary on Mondays and Wednesdays, and Oak Forest Elementary on Tuesdays and Thursdays — both after school until 5 p.m. For more information, call 409.962.6644 or visit ymcasetx.org.
